Word Study
Here you will find information about Words Their Way, our word study program which focuses on spelling patterns. In class each week, students are placed in a group to work on a spelling pattern they are trying to master. Students practice their spelling pattern, in a variety of ways, throughout the week. Students are expected to master the words in the sort by the end of the week and will be assessed with a quiz.

Word Wall Words (Word Study)
In our classroom, WORD WALL WORDS come from a variety of places; including, a 3rd grade site word list and students writing notebooks. These words are different from the Words-Their-Way words because they are not taught through typical patterns or spelling rules. Each week your student will be introduced to 5 new word wall words. Please check back here weekly for the 5 new words of the week. Students are expected to spell all word wall words correctly by the end of third grade!
Words-Their-Way
Words-Their-Way is a program that focuses on spelling patterns. In class, each week, students are placed in a group to work on a spelling pattern they are trying to master. Students practice their spelling pattern in a variety of ways throughout the week. Students are expected to master each week's sort. Words that are not mastered become part of that students individual word wall to practice.
Words Their Way ActivitiesSilly Sentences - Write as least 10 sentences, with at least one of your sort words in each sentence.
Picture Words - Draw a picture and write your sort words in the picture. ABC Words - Write all of your sort words neatly in ABC order. Say, Copy, Cover - Write all of your words neatly one time; Say the word, Copy the word, Cover the word and try to write it on your own. Type Your Words - Use your computer to type your sort words. Rainbow Spelling - Copy your sort words three times each using different colors. Colorful Words - Write you sort words using one color for vowels and another color for consonants. Cursive Spelling - Write your sort words two times neatly in cursive. Poem Spelling - Write a poem using at least 5 of your sort words. Story Words - Write a good story using at least 10 of your sort words Ransom Words - Write your sort words by cutting out letters in a newspaper or a magazine and glue them on paper. Wordle - Go to www.wordle.net to create a word cloud using ALL of your sort words. Caption Words - Cut out a picture from a newspaper or a magazine and use sort words to write a story about the picture. Parts of Speech - Classify your words by parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.) Letter Words - write a letter to a friend using all of your sort words. |
