Reading Workshop
4 nights - 30 minutes
Our social issues unit continues this week with a series of lessons focused on identifying social issues and ask probing questions in our book club books. We will begin our next read aloud, Maniac Magee, this week!
Writing Workshop
Homework: Due to our upcoming chapel, we would like everyone to spend their writing time reading and memorizing their parts for our service. Please be sure to practice reading your part aloud with an adult. Students should also make sure they have completed the following Mr. Anker activities by Thursday, March 3rd:
-Homophones sets 5-15
-Spelling 10-15
In Class:
Last week we launched our unit on argument writing by holding a debate. Students were charged with the question: Was the Giving Tree Weak or Strong? Students listened to the text closely, as they collected evidence for both sides of the argument. Next, they were challenged to make their claim, choosing a side they would then prepare to debate. After their first caucus and chance to state their claim, everyone prepared their rebuttal and were eager to jump back at their opposing partner. This launch was exciting and informative.
This week we will be taking a look at how argument essays present themselves in the world around us. We will map out a shared essay together to identify key parts to this essay style.
Math Workshop
3 nights - 30 minutes
This week we will begin Unit 9, Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Students will receive study guides in class on Tuesday. We will be focused on:
- naming equivalencies among fractions, decimals, and percents
- renaming fractions as decimals and percents
- converting fractions to decimals and percents using a calculator
Additional math practice this week might include online/SRB games such as: Fraction Match, Rugs and Fences, and Fraction/Percent Concentration.
