- Students need to keep in mind their Type To Learn goal for the second trimester is lesson 16.
- It has been brought to the 4th grade team's attention that group texting/chats are beginning to circulate. Just a reminder, we do not encourage this kind of activity nor should it be done on the school laptops.
Reading Workshop
4 nights - 30 minutes
This week we continue our nonfiction reading! We are learning the power of annotating our texts in small groups - sharing our thinking with one another as we read a text together is a powerful way to bring clarity and grow insightful ideas around more complex content in a text. Students will also practice identifying the main idea, text structure, and determining importance.
Writing Workshop
Homework: Imagine you are on the Susan Constant coming to the New World. Write a diary entry about your trip. You should include the following things:
- The hardships you have to deal with on the ship.
- Why you are coming to the New World.
- What you are excited and scared about.
In Class:
This week, students will non-fiction/informational writing. This unit is cross curricular - connecting into our Reading & Social Studies units. By the end of this unit, students will be responsible for crafting a historical non-fiction "feature article," that highlights one of our Social Studies concepts. We will be doing the research, drafting, revising, & editing both in class and at home!
Math Workshop
3 nights - 30 minutes
Our Unit 5 Assessment will be on Wednesday, December 2nd. Students should be able to:
1. Write number models for estimates
2. Use the partial products algorithm to multiply
3. Add & Subtract decimals
4. Measure line segments to the nearest 1/4 inch & 1/2 centimeter
5. Complete "Whats my Rule" tables
6. Complete story problems using estimated & exact answers

Social Studies
This week students will be rotating through "Jamestown Exploration Centers". They will explore a variety of documents, photographs, maps, and videos - walking in the shoes of the colonists and learning what it took to develop and survive in the New World. This is an innovative and active learning experience that allows students to be creative while establishing solid content specific understandings.
Word Study
This week we will introduce sort #7. For homework, students should sort their words by where the accented syllable falls in the word (1st or 2nd syllable), recording their work in their word study notebook.
Noticings for this sort:
- A Phonogram is a letter or series of letters that represents a sound.
- There are three different spellings for the r-controlled -a phonograms: ar (partner), air (fairy), are (careful)
- There are two different spellings for the r-controlled -o phonogram: or (perform), ore (ignore), oar (boar)
