Reading Workshop
4 nights - 30 minutes
Last week, we began to see glimpses of some of our characters inner-selves, propelling us to work to 'Read' our characters, much like we work to 'Read' people in our own lives. To read people - you notice when a person does or says something significant, and think, “How does that new action fit with (or change) what I already know about this person? In this way, readers use a character’s action, and especially the patterns in those actions, as windows to the character’s personality. We have been using the read-aloud, Tiger Rising, to form theories about our favorite characters, track how they evolve throughout the story, & discuss how authors often use dialogue, actions, & inactions to relay information about the characters. This week we will continue to develop insights into our characters lives and develop evidence-based theories.
Throughout this unit, students are learning strategies to attend to the text, ensuring deeper comprehension through the use of turn & talks with their partners and stop & jots in their notebooks. Students are continually looking across the learning progressions to ensure they are building their envisioning and inferring skills. By the end of this unit, students will be prepared to write a 'Reading Response" to show their understanding and growth over the course of the unit.
Writing Workshop
Homework: Students should be reading their piece out loud to find more places to add specific details, embellish, and/or stretch out important scenes.
It would be greatly beneficial for the writer to read their piece to their grandparent or another adult to ensure they have not missed any key details.
In Class: In Class, writers have been refreshing their revision skills and applying them to their grandparent/special person Small Moment. Last week, we read numerous examples of strong leads and talked about the importance of "hooking & holding" our reader. This week we will be discussing the importance of vivid language & authentic details, strong conclusions, and how to organize paragraphs. By Wednesday, students will be printing out their pieces and editing with their peers. The final draft is due Friday, October 2nd (we will do all printing at school).
Math Workshop
3 nights - 30 minutes
Last week, students were assessed on Unit 2. We are returning, coding, and sending the tests home this week. Please remember to go over them with your child before signing and returning them. We will be on the lookout for them after fall break.
This week we are launching Unit 3: Multiplication and Division; Number Sentences and Algebra. The focus of the unit is multiplication and division fact families. Students will be working toward solidifying their "turn around facts" when solving problems with missing numbers (variables). One way to help your child at home throughout this math unit is to reinforce using flash cards at home to practice automaticity. You also may want to print out timed-drill sheets and have your child practice at home. Improving our multiplication &/or division skills is a great weekly goal & extra weekly math practice
*Multiplication Drill Sheets
*Division Drill Sheet
This week, we will be focused on:
- Reviewing strategies for solving multiplication facts
- Exploring prime and composite numbers
- Exploring the relationship between multiplication and division

- Maker Faire Atlanta is taking place on Saturday, October 3rd from 10am-5pm and Sunday, October 4th from 12pm-5pm. This fun, family-friendly event is a great way to get a taste of making, tinkering, and design. Best of all, Lovett will have a booth there. Register for free here.
- Scholastic orders are due by Friday, October 2nd. If you would like to order materials, please place these orders online. Complete instructions are located on our reading workshop page and in the Arrow, Math & Science, and Bonus catalogs that were sent home. Scholastic has a large variety of "Just Right Books" (look for the guided reading level to determine if the books you are ordering are in their band (OPQ or RST).
- Type to Learn Lesson Goal: Students must pass lesson 8 to be meeting grade level expectations for the first trimester in Type To Learn. All students may check out their laptops Monday - Thursday evenings to complete the lessons at home.
- Please remember to sign and return the "Behavior Expectations Form." I have copied a link to the form, if you have misplaced it, below our Monday Mail.
- Homework & Laptops: Fourth Graders are demonstrating reasonable behavior by turning in their homework on time. Students who have neglected to turn their work in are not permitted to take home their laptop that evening. Thank you for supporting us in our efforts to nurture responsible fourth graders.
