Homework Expectations Reminder:
Reading
4 nights - 30 minutes (Remember to record your reading in your planner! NO EXCUSES!)
In Class: This week we will take the excitement we have generated about our reading lives and becoming stronger readers and focus that energy into having deeper thoughts and conversations about our books. We will be learning how to jot stronger & post-it more effectively through the use of a shared reading. Students will have heavy scaffolding in our first lesson and slowly phase out the support as they grow in their confidence. We must learn to jot with a purpose, or be left to wonder why we must jot at all. So Deep!
Writing:
Homework: Free Write. Students may choose their own topics. There is a 4 paragraph minimum. Please remember every piece from here on will be edited for our “Givens”. Writing should be completed in the "Free Write" section of the writer's notebook.
In Class: This week we will begin immersing ourselves in a plethora of small moment & personal narrative texts and exploring the elements that distinguish personal narratives & small moments from other types of writing. We will also be using mentor texts such as Julie Brinckloe's Fireflies, Karen Hesse's Come On, Rain!, & Marla Frazee's Roller Coaster.
Last week, in grammar, we began our sentence study. Students have been immersed in the four sentence types: Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, & Exclamatory. We are trying to transfer our grammar work to our writing so we incorporate varied sentence types & keep the flow moving nicely. We will continue to examine parts of sentences throughout the coming week!
