Reading Workshop
4 nights - 30 minutes
Before the break, we began reading our next read aloud, Maniac Magee. This week we will focus our mini-lessons around studying the characters in our books to help us understand social issues in our world and in our lives. We can read into what characters long for and how they react in the face of an issue to better understand the social issues ourselves.
*Our book club meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 16th. All students should come prepared with their best jots to share with their groups.
Writing Workshop
Homework: Reading about social issues opens us up to understand the perspective of other people and even to better understand ourselves. This week for homework, write a two paragraph essay (minimum of 5 sentences in each paragraph) answering the following questions: What does Eve Bunting, the author of Fly Away Home, teach you about homelessness? What do you now think about this issue? Has you opinion changed since reading this book? Why or Why Not?
In Class:
Before the break students walked through a shared text that demonstrates the format of argument essays. They identified the introduction/hook/ & claim, the distinct reasons and supporting evidence in each paragraph, and the conclusion, where the author related back to the claim and wrapped up the piece. After, identifying the key elements in the argumentative piece, they were tasked with outlining the article and the opposing side. This was challenging work!
This week, students will begin the focus of this unit, "Should chocolate milk be served in schools?" They will be given a multitude of resources to read, outline, and being to prepare for choosing their claim.
