Reading Workshop

Readers have been learning to look at various perspectives in their texts to learn more about specific social issues. This week, students will look closely at the power struggles within their text to better understand their books social issues. They will learn to challenge their texts representations of certain social issues and use this to drive their book club discussions.
*Our book club meetings will take place on Tuesday, March 5th and Thursday, March 7th. All students should come prepared with their best jots to share with their groups.
Writing Workshop
Homework: Students should focus on completing the draft for their argument essay by next Monday. This includes making revisions from lessons taught in class, as well as using the persuasive writing checklist. All drafts must be ready to peer edit Monday!
In Class:
Last week, students held another great debate. This time they were well researched on both sides of the topic and were able to easily maneuver from one perspective to another. We are beginning to notice stronger arguments are driven by facts and thus our factual evidence, as opposed to our opinion, form a stronger position. By the end of the week, students had chosen their claim and began planning their reasons/evidence and explanations of the evidence.
This week, students will receive a guide to follow for their essay. As soon as their planning is complete and approved, writers may start working their drafts. We will learn how to use transition words and sentences to make our pieces flow smoothly, as well as how to properly quote sources to give meaning and authority to our pieces.
