Reading Workshop
4 nights - 30 minutes
Students are reading articles and researching information to become more familiar with their "Hero's Matter" writing topic. In addition to our nonfiction reading, we will be making a final run at book clubs for the year. Students are choosing their book and planning their meeting goals this week.
Writing Workshop
Homework: This week, students will be choosing an issue or a sustainability topic of the focus of their piece. completing their prewriting and starting in on drafting is their goal.
In Class:
What is a hero? That is the question. This writing unit combines narrative writing and a service learning project. Our writers will use service-based topics/issues as a catalyst for a hero to emerge in their fantasy. Writers will be creating fictional characters, problems/solutions, setting, conflict/resolutions, and highlighting life lessons. Please visit this site for more background about our project.
Last week, our class generated a list of the qualities of a "real life hero." This week the pre-writing and research phase will begin as students identify global issues that they feel passionately about.
Math Workshop
3 nights - 30 minutes
Our End-of-Year Math Assessment will be given on Wednesday and Thursday. Students should refer to their review packets to prepare.

We continue to add new information to our study of the Southern Colonies. We will take a look at the final chapters for this unit and begin to review. We will also take look
In addition to our regular unit we introduced 4th Grade MARKET last week (see below). This is a short economics unit that is driven by our young entrepreneurs ideas.
MARKET:
Students were introduced to the 4th grade Market last week! Everyone received their "Application for a Business License." We will review the information on the application, divide up into different businesses, and look at examples of the kinds of goods that have been produced in past years. our entrepreneurs are going to love this!
All work for the market must be completed at home. Business owners will be in the planning stages this week. The "Application for a Business License" will be due Friday; allowing owners to meet and plan efficiently before filling out their applications.

- Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers, handmade cards, and special gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week! Mrs. Shirley and I are so grateful to have such a wonderful group of students and parents.
- I am so proud of our class for their perseverance last week during the ERB testing. We have several large tasks left to accomplish during the next three weeks before we can call it a year.
- End of Year Conferences will be held on Monday, May 16th. These conferences are optional. If you would like to request a conference please send Mrs. Shirley and I a list of topics you wish to cover by Wednesday, so we can prepare and make the best use of the time together. Please remember conferences are NOT to be used to discuss class placement for 5th grade or end-of-year grades. Be on the lookout for an email from me regarding summer work ideas.
- Scholastic orders are due by Wednesday, May 11th. If you would like to order materials, please place these orders online. Complete instructions are located on our reading workshop page and in the catalogs sent home last Friday.
- Type to Learn Lesson Goal: Students must pass lesson 24 to be meeting grade level expectations for the third trimester in Type To Learn. The due date for this trimesters TTL goals Thursday, May 19th.
- Yearbooks were distributed on Monday. Please make sure your child's name and teacher's name are written in the front of the yearbook. We will host a grade level signing day the last week of school.
